Away from the rink, Winston-Salem is a great city to live in and is one of the larger cities in North Carolina in terms of population size. The city got its name when Winston and Salem were officially combined way back in the early 1900’s. The downtown area is full of restaurants, stores, and shops. In the winter time during the hockey season, North Carolina still gets a bit cold at times, but you’re not waking up before morning practice to shovel snow off your car often.
The city of Winston-Salem is best known by many for its history in the tobacco industry. Way back in the 1870’s, R.J. Reynolds started the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. You might be thinking, what’s that? The company name itself might not ring a bell, but the products (cigarettes) they produce are well known. Camel, Winston, and Salem to name a few.
Many today fortunately understand the negative ramifications this industry have made on society and the individuals who use their products. The industry as a whole has played a large part in the regions economy and has employed many people throughout the last century so it’s worth noting on.
